How Big Your Pooch’s Crate Should Be?

The right size is important because the crate should neither be too big nor too cramped. The crate should be big enough for your dog to turn around easily and stand up without hurting his head on the top. When lying on his sides, the dog should be able to properly stretch his leg because your dog’s too need leg space the way you do. It is advisable that you as a dog owner should not buy a crate that is too big for your dog because then, the extra space could be used by your four-legged friend as a bathroom. In such a case don’t you think that the whole purpose of crate training your puppy shall go in vain? Also, the basic idea behind crate training your dog is to give them a sense a of security but if there is a lot of extra space in the crate, the dog might feel insecure.

How Would You Measure an Adult Dog for a Crate?

Let us see how can you measure your fully grown dog.

If you have an adult dog then, you need to measure both its length and height. Coming on to his width, it is not mandatory because once the length and height are known, the width shall be proportional. To make the measuring task easier what you can do is, just make your dog stand against a wall (preferably in a corner with his bottom against the wall). Make sure you have a measuring tape, a notebook, and a pen beforehand. You can make the marks on the wall with something that rubs-off easily later such as a chalk.

  • Measuring the Length

For this, you shall have to get the dog standing on all his four legs upright tight. Then, measure from the tip of the nose to the base of his tail. Do not include the entire length of your dog’s tail in the measurement otherwise, the crate shall be too big.

Tip: If your dog is the one with a very thick tail then, you can include some part of his tail so that when he wags, the tail does not hit against the crate.

Finally, to get the minimum length for the crate, just add 2 inches (5 centimeter) in case of smaller dogs and 4 inches (10 centimeter) for larger dogs. This addition is required to provide the dog with ample room so that he can move around easily.

  • Measuring the Height

To measure the height, you shall have to make the dog sit and measure him in the uptight position from the floor to the tallest point of his head.

Tip: If you have a dog whose ears are erect then, you need to measure from the floor to the tip of the ears.

Now, to get the minimum height, again add 2 to 4 inches.

These measurements shall give you a minimum crate size so even if you get a crate bigger than these measurements, it would not make much difference. But do not go way bigger than the measurements otherwise, you shall end up with a very big crate, cons of which you already know as mentioned earlier.

What Would Be the Best Size of Crate for a Puppy?

If you have a puppy and you are planning to buy a crate for him then, you can measure its height and length following the above instructions. However, it is advisable to buy a crate for your dog according to the maximum size that your dog can grow. We say so because pups grow up very quickly and thus, buying a dog crate for every stage of their growth is an expensive option. Even though, if you want to enjoy each stage of your pup’s growth then, choosing among the cheap dog carriers would be a better option as it will save your hard-earned money. Once, your dog is a fully grown-up fellow then, you can buy an expensive and stylish dog crate for him in which he would be able to enjoy for a longer period of time.

A Money Saving Tip for All You Dog Owners

The best thing that you can do to save money while choosing a dog crate is to go for a resizable dog crate. To keep upgrading the dog crate and investing in it as your pooch grows is difficult. So, you can do one thing and that is to buy a crate for your dog’s fully grown-up size and along with it buy a divider too. You can place the divider to reduce the size of the dog crate to suit your four-legged friend.

If you do not know what a divider is as far as a dog crate is concerned, no need to worry. Just stick with this article!

A divider is usually made up of removable wire or it can also look like a wooden panel that can be inserted inside the crate so as to adjust the available size. The divider allows you to keep altering its position as your pooch grows so that enough space can be provided to him.

The Right Size of Crate According to Your Dog’s Weight and Height

Various Styles of a Dog Crate

If you ask which crate would be the best for your dog then, it would be difficult to answer. The reason is that actually no crate is the best because the best is the one that suits and fulfills the needs of your pooch. Obviously, what your pet needs is best known by you and therefore, you are the one to decide that which would be the best dog crate for car. In fact, it is not necessary that the safest dog crate for car shall be safe for your pooch too. So, make a wise decision.

Still, if you need suggestions then, wired crates are a good option because they not only give you a good value for money but also, they are practical. Practical because they can be collapsed for the sake of easy storage, they are transportable, and if one bought, dividers can be used inside them.

As far as journeys (especially airplanes) are concerned, the best travel dog crate shall be the one made of plastic. You can use these plastic dog crates at your home as well. Otherwise, you can keep a wired crate for home and a plastic one for travels as they are very handy. Alternatively, you can also go for soft sided crates when traveling but they are not very durable and airline approved. So, they can be used in case of short trips.

Wooden dog crates are stylish but least practical. The only advantage of them is that they are the best-looking ones. If you have a grown-up hound then, wooden crate is a very good option. This is because they would not be able to chew a wooden crate.
